" OTAKI MEETING • [AMERICAN BEAUTY WINS THE /'■ BIG HANDICAP. Ths Otaki meeting was concluded, yesterday, in fine but windy weather. The attendance was fair. The Judicial met several times during the i afternoon. In the Trial Handicap, A. Stratton, rider of Paphian, was cautioned for cutting in too quickly. In the Otaki Hack Handicap C. Reed was severely cautioned for) striking La Paloma over the nose with his whip. -No further action was taken, as it was [considered that the occurrence was acciI dental, and did not affect the result of ■ race. f'l D. Gunn, rider of American Beauty, ■ was cautioned for cutting in too quickly at the start of the President's Handicap, and Butler, rider of Idle Talk, was '‘fined -£5 for crossing Kilgour. He was also fined .£1 for not returning Mr. A. N. Campbell's colours. '• Waimahoe, with A. Reed in the saddle, .was favourite for the Trial Handicap, for whioh the whole of the acceptors went to the post; Paphian was the quickest to find his feet, and he spreadeagled the field, winning by two lengths from thd little-fancied Pantler, with the favourite, who got a bad run, third. Manchester and Panache were the next to finish. La Paloma and Martial Dawn were equally backed for the Otaki Hack Handicap. The former began the quickest, but she was’scon headed by Martial Dawn, who led into the straight. There she was challenged by La Paloma, but in a grand finish the loader held her own, and won by a head. Siberian was a ' length away, and March On was fourth. ' /
Otaum Kid, Loyal Arch, and Ore Ore was thei order of favouritism for- the Steeplechase'. Loyal Arch set .a fast pace, and jumped well to the double, where she ran off. Otanru Kid then took charge, with Master Boris, but the for- . mer fell, and 'Master Boris continued in front. Ore Ore challenged at the last fence, but Master Boris beat him by a ' neck. To Toa was several lengths away, ’ and then came Malincourt, Scimitar and Hushabye fell, and the first-named broke his neck. • / Beloved and White Blaze were taken out of the President’s Handicap, Verbosity and Dainty Step being' better backed than Kilrush. American Beauty ■ took charge at the start, and led all the way. Dainty Step was in behind her to the home turn, where Verbosity and Printemps supplanted her, but they ; could not reach American Beauty, who won 'by a neck. Dainty Step was fourth. The winner was the outsider of the field, end gave the' biggest f eturn of. the meeting. All started in the Electric. Hack Handicap, Maker© being backed down to.a short price. She began well, and with Hallowroz and Sunbath led down the back. Rounding the bend the top-weight made the most of her inside position, and she led into the straight from Hallowroz. In the run. to the poet she was ridden hard, but maintained her advantage, and won by a length from Hallowroz. who bat Edendale by a head. Lord.Usk was fourth. The five acceptors all lined up for tl'e Railway Handicap, Nursing Sister, Prince Ferouz, and Birkie being backed in that order. Prince Ferouz waa the smartest at the '■barrier, ’but Going Up toon-headed • him, and led for* half a mile, when Birkie tonk charge. He was first into the straight, but in the run home he was challenged by Nursing Sister and Prince JFerouz, and the trio crossed the line together. The judge awarded the .' victory to Nursing Sister by a nose from Birkie, with Prince Ferouz a head [away.
Sea Foam was scratched for 1 the Rahui Wolter ’Handicap; and the Awa-puni-trained Admiration' carried most money, with Militair© second choice;. Passenger and Bitters led out of the straight from .Admiration and Beloved. Bitters cleared out down the back, and was first into the straight. Beloved then challenged him, but the Advance gelding was full of running, and won by n couple of lengths. Beloved was clear of Passenger, and then camo Kyoto and Admiration. . Printemps, Idle Talk, and Bonny Briar declined their engagement in the Waitohu Welter Handicap. The chances of Princess Pat, Detroit, Sir Fanciful, and White Blaze wore most preferred. , Astinome took ujr the running/ and going down the back she had a break on the field, but a furlong from home she compounded, and the remainder were all in a line. One hundred yards off the post the field was stretched across the course. Then Detroit shot out with Princess Pat and Probate, and the trio crossed the line together.
