SHIPPING COMPANIES

ANNUAL SMOKE CONCERT. The annual smoke concert of the combined shipping companies was held in tho Dominion Farmers’ Institute on Saturday night. Mr. E. V. Bevan presided. Mr. A F. Roberts proposed the toast of "The Navy," mentioning the splendid work it had performed during the war. Captain Chudley, R.N.R., in replying, appealed to everybody to support the Navy. "tVo all at some timi-," he said, "take out an insurance policy to protect ourselves. Why shouldn't wo take out a policy by supporting the Navy to insure our Empire?” Other toapts honoured were: "Tho Mercantile Marine," propos ?d by Mr. Bevan and replied to 'by Mr. A. Walker; "The Shipping Companies,” proposed by Mr. J. T. Martin and replied to by Mr. C M. Turrell; "The Shipping Officers’ Guild,” proposed by Captain Petersen and replied to by Mr. A. D. Bayfoild; "The Teams,” proposed by Mr. A. C. Kitto and replied to by the captains. Musical items were rendered by the following:—Messrs. A. Fuller, A. Vvhito, G Clapham, Verdi Mackenzie, and C. Moore.

The committer- responsible for the concert consisted of Messrs. K. L. Penny (secretary), A. D. Bayfeild (chairman), E. Brown, F. Tilyard, L. Jones, W. N. C. Willcox. J. N Barns, R. Hill, and P. L. Hodge.
