BOXING
WELLINGTON COLLEGE TOURNEY. The semi-finals and finals of the Wellington College boxing tournament were held at the School last night. There was a large attendance of boys and visitors. Dr. Pomare, Mr. Cresswell, and Air. J. P. Firth (who acted as referee) were present. The bouts were all willing, and in tho majority of cases the competitors, showed gcod science. Mr. Firth’s verdict that J. Shelley was the most scientific and l>e.=»t boxer of the evening was very well received. Shelley, who suffers from a physical disability that would keep most boys out of tho ring, showed quickness, science, and footwork, and' used both hands effectively. His host blow, however, was a. straight loft, with' any amount of power behind it. Mr. Firth, in mentioning his reasons for picking Shelley as the best boxer, said that he was a boxer who used good, straight, clean blows. There were no "Americanisms about him,” ho fought in: the good old British style, steady, erect, and keeping his man off with straight blows. He meiltioned that "Americanisms” were spoiling the game of boxing. Results were as follow: — Middle-weight. Semi-finals.—Beard beat Miller, Shelley beat Brown, Scott beat Gaudin; Shelly beat Scott. Filial—Shelley beat Beard. Light-weights. Semi-finals. —Zohrab beat Bell ii; Richardson i beat Adams ii, Turfis beat Zohrab. Final—Turfis bpat Richardson. Feather-weight. Semi-final.—Gore beat Nicholls. Final. —Gore bent Warnos. Bantam-weight. Semi-final.—Morgan beat Archibald; Parlane beat Player. Final.—Parlano boat Morgan.
