CANTERBURY GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKETS IMPROVED INQUIRY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, August'3o. Business has livened up. during tht past few days in both oats and seeds. Oats, for which 3s. 6d., f.0.b., 5.1.,i could' not obtained ten days ago, have been sold at 3s. 7d., and the improvement could be set down at about a penny per bushel. A grade Gartons are worth to farmers from 25.. 9d. to 2s. lOd. The inquiry may be temporary, due to end-of-month requirements, '■ although the general impression is that tho absence of offers from , farmers will prevent the market casing. / Super cowgrass is in very keen demand for export, and fair quantities have been shipped. This demand is being reflected in a fii'mer tone for secondary quality for local use. A fair area of new pasture is being put down throughout the province this season, and inquiry is coining in 'from farmers. It is believed that the crop is shorter than was anticipated. The sale of super cowgrass for export was at 170 s. per-cwt. (Is. Cd. per lb. dressetl). Good quality farmers’ seed is worth from Is. Id. to Is. 2Jd. per lb. Cocksfoot has also shown an improvement, and prices have firmed ,during the past few days by about a penny per lb. Good quality seed is worth to farmers from GJd. to 7Jd o per lb. A considerable inquiry has set in from tho North Island. Italian ryegrass is also being inquired for from tho north, and some business has Wen done in this seed. WHOLESALE PRODUCE PRICES Messrs. BRADFORD WOOL MARKET London, August 29. ; The Bradford market shows more activity, and merinos and fiuo crossbreds are firmer.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn, LIVE STOCK STATISTICS Pueliminnry figures for the season 1920-21, issued by the Government Statistician, show the total number of cattle in Now Zealand as 3,112,742; dairy cows (included), 993,473; horses, 333,743; and pigs, 342,227. These represent good increases in dairy cows and pigs, and a
decrease in horses. The complete return of sheep as at April 30 shows a Dominion total of 23,285,031—a decrease of 031,939 compared with last year. FEEDING DAIRY COWS In the course of an article in the Journal of Agriculture on the feeding of dairy cows and the value of l supplementary fodder crops in order to'get the maximum returns, Mr. A. ll,' Cockayne says "Supplementary grain-feeding of dairy cows is little adopted in- New Zealand, but I am strongly in favour of the growing ,of a small quantity of certain concentrates, such as oats, barley, peas, or beans, for feeding during the first month or so after the cows come into milk. Such feed provision, especially of the last two crops, is probably sounder than buying bran, a concentrate that is popular with a good many dairy-farmers. I would emphasise tho opinion that the time fbr relying so much on pasture in New Zealand has gone by, and that tho really adequate feeding of dairy cows can- only be secured by a thorough recognition of this fact by our dairy-farmers. We should by all means improve as far as practicable the production from grassland; but no such methods will enable the farmer to secure the maximum return from his herd. This can be done only by adequately supplementing the feed from pastures by means of specially grown fodder crops. COMMERCIAL ITEMS INVESTMENT SHARES.
