NOTES AND COMMENTS

By Glbxcox. , At Hawera to-day tho Egmont-Wanga-nui Hunt Club meeting will bo held. Racing will commence with the Maiden Steeplechase, two miles, for which Tornoa may bo tho most likely to get round without mishap. To Maire h\s moro pace than tho ordinary hunter, and ho may be installed favourite in the Hunters’ Hurdles. Tn the Maiden Handicap, S. pair, Danger Zone and Still Sea, are at the head of tho list, and if J>oth go to tho post the Joll bracket may be ftr* curite. There are three-hack races on the card, one being run over seven ‘furlongs and the other two over a furlong less. A much better idea would have been to have had an open event oir the programme. Explorer, who has been galloping well at Wanganui, may show up in the Waverley Handicap. Tirau and, Onipoto are tho beat performed jumpers in tho Hunt Cup, and Awake may bo favourite in whichever race hia trainer elects, to start him.

Loyal Irish was well fancied for the Maitland Cup, one mile and three furlongs, which was run last Saturday, but as the cablegram was silent m to the re-

suit, it is improbable that tho Absurd colt was successful. It is tho intention of the Hawera trainer, J. Brown, toi give Rational a race at New Plymouth on Saturday, After that tho throe-year-old and the Absurd —Lady Eta filly will be taken north to race in tho Avondale Guineas and the Avondale Stakes. Tattersalls’ raco meeting will be held at Randwick on Saturday week, and it is expected that most of the Now Zealand horses at present in Sydney will be seen in action there. Sleeping Beauty (^oniform— Peace), who was started ten times last season, and was placed on five occasions, is engaged in the Trial Plate nt the Rangitikct Hunt meeting. , ,Tho Newcastle jockey., A. Orrell, lias taken up his residence at Masterton, and' is regularly in riding work there. He will carry silk for the first time in ths Dominion at Marton next when ho will steer Vagabond, 1 Trespass, Miss Gold, and Rekanui. \ Otapawa (Husbandman —Beautiful Star), who is a full brother to that great stake winner Volo, will compote in the Maiden Hack Raco at Egmont to-day. This gelding has a. nice stylo of galloping, and may prove useful in the future. Ho is’ trained by P, Coffey. Mr. A. Alexander, has bought a youngster which claims the breeding of Bisogno —Ora. This youngster is bred to gallop, as the dam threw several good ones, while Bisogne was something exceptional as a racehorse, and there is no reason why he should not attain the same standard as a sire, for his veins contain the 'best blood possible to find in ,the Southern Hemisphere. ' ‘ C. Jackson’s stable will be represented by Awake and Erie nt tho Egmont-Wa-nganui Hunt Club meeting. The former will be ridden <by apprentice A. Rutherford, while the ex-Auckland light-weight, A. Dowding, will bo up on Erje. A regrettable mishap has overtaken tho Prince of Wales’s Austr»li?n-hrod steeplechaser Kinlark, who for some time past has been turned out in a. four-acre paddock at tho Prince’s place in Wfthvick-' shire. Whether he was kicked by Another horse or frightened in some way, the fact remains that tho gelding sank into a bog, fj-om which he was extricated only when two shiro horsas were enlisted to pull him out. This was accomplished all right, and as far as can bo ascertained the only injuries were a few superficial grazes. /Mr. Niall, by the way, who gavo Kinlark to tho I rince, not long ago received ''from His, Royal Highness a beautiful A silver cup, standing well 6vear a foot in height, adorned the table round which the annual meeting of the Maliawatu Racing Club was held on Monday night. This was the .trophy promised by Mr, J. Gorin&Johnston, a vice-presi-dent the club, who has recently returned from a trip te England. The trophy has inscribed on its side the words, "Manqwatu Qup, 1921,” and it will become the property straight out of the next winner of the big race. Last year this race carried a prize of 1259 sovereigns. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the donor, and tho president (Mr. J. H. P. Strang) expressed the feelings of the club in saying that members greatly regretted Mr. GoringJohnston’s of relinquishing racing owing to his intended absence from the Dominion. “The turf can ill afford to lose n patron of his stamp,” snid Mr. Strang, "afid it is to be sincerely hoped that ho will return at no very distant date.” ,
