THE PUBLIC SERVICE
RETIREMENTS ON SUPERANNUATION. The reductions that are taking place in the staffs of tho public Departments appear to be involving the retirement of nearly all officers who have completed their term of service and are eligible for superannuation. Some of these officers had not exiiected to retire so soon, but generally speaking they are accepting their notices in a philosophic spirit. They realise that since staffs have got to be reduced, the retention of their services would involve the retirement of men who aro not qualified to draw full superannuation. A point they do not overlook is that if they retire now their superannuation will be based on the salaries drawn by them during the last three years—the best years that the New Zealand Civil Service has known. If a reduction in salaries comes later it will affect the superannuation of men who aro then, about to retire. The Civil Service organisations are watching the reductions closely, but it do's not appear that they have yet found ground for protest. They have asked in the past for the retirement of men who have served full terms and are eligible for superannuation, and the tction that is being taken now is in line with this request.
