ENGLISH ELEVEN’S UPHILL GAME 326 SCORED IN SECOND INNINGS SPLENDID BATTING BY FAULKNER AND H. ASHTON By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, August 29. There was glorious weather for the, continuation of the match, Australia v. the English Eleven. The wicket was excellent, and the attendance large.'Playing an uphill game in'the face of their big deficit, the Englishmen gave a much better account of themselves, chiifly as tho result of the brilliant play of Faulkner and Hubert Ashton, who' contributed 228 out of 32G runs. M'Donald again took the bowling honours.. The start was bad, Maclaren succumbing to M'Donald’s first ball ;and Foster drove one back to M'Donald, making throe wickets for 33. Gilbert Ashton and Hubert Ashton were associated, and both gave a brisk display, Gilbert hitting crisp and fine , square-leg cuts off M'Donald. Ths half- • century took forty-six minutes to score.; When 36, Gilbert Ashton got his leg' in front of Armstrong, who displaced Gregory. Four for 60. Faulkner came next, and scoring slowed down. Ryder replaced M'Donald at 68, and Mailey* came on for Armstrong at 86. Faulkner opened out, and several times sent Hailey to the boundary. The century, was up in eighty minutes. A remarkable feature of ths tour has been the number of times straight drives off the Australian bowling have hit the opposite wicket. This happened three times within an hour to-day. The batting now became spirited, in spits of tho safe and ' attractive fielding. Further bowling changes added 50 in forty minutes. Mailey and McDonald bowled after the luncheon adjournment. The latter, at his fastest, kept down the runs. At 155, Gregory relieved M'Donald, and the partnership produced a century in ninety-thiSG minutes. Th® batting was again very lively, y l ™- brilliant driving and glancing. Armstrong replaced Gregory at 192, and Ui<K change was fatal to Hubert Ashton, who went out in the same way as his brother. He batted for 150 minutes. Five for -IL Faulkner had made 73 when he lost Hubert Ashton. As ho approached his century he was inclined to be rash, but he plavcd a safe gams again after tea,, and completed his century in 160 minutes. In the meantime Chapman had gone out; six for 250, and Claude Ashton’s fall for nil saw the score seven for 256, with Falcon not out. Thirty-six runs were added in twenty minutes, including a six by Faulkner off Hailey. The partnership produced fifty before M Donald dissolved it; eight for . 307 Armstrong rang various changes in the bowbng, and Faulkner engineered, to get most of - it, and banged his hardest. He drove one hot one back and hit Armstrong. He reached 150 in 210 minutes, and ended by smiting Armstrong to deep square- - leg; nine for 326. He gave no chances, ' and hit a beautiful sixer and twenty fours. The Australians had only twelve minutes of ploy before etumps were drawn, ■. and lost one wicket for 25 runs. The following are the scores: — ENGLAND.
