STAR BOATING CLUB
- The fifty-fifth annurtl report of Jhe Star Boating Club states that the overdraft nt the bank stands at .£62 6s. lid, and there is an additional liability ot .£lOl 9s. 6d. for sundry accounts. Against this must be set overdue subscriptions amounting to 41194 19s. Gd. The committee has, however, taken a conservative estimate of this amount, which there Is every probability may be improved, and considers that •£144 19s. Gd. may bo classed bad or doubtful, in explanation of which, a considerable amount is for returned soldier members whose names are still on the club’s books, although they have not availed themselves of club privileges since their return. The expenditure of .£220 for oars during the past season will not be recurring. so that withi prompt payment by members of their subscriptions for the coming year the overdraft should be paid off very soon. At the annual meeting held on September 1, 1920, Messrs. A. Bayfeild and F. H. Tailor Were unanimously elected life-active members, and Messrs. E. Duthie C. Fraser, F. G. B. Gill, AV. R. Hackworth, E. C. Russell, A. B. Rose, life-honorary members. The membership of the club .now stands at 364, made up as follows; —63 life active, 136 active, 55 life honorary, 46 honorary, and 6-1 country. Thirty-five new members joined the club last year, and owing to their removal from Wellington, etc, several members resigned. The club was represented at regattas held at Picton (New Year), Wellington, Picton (championship), and Wanganui. At the Now Year’s Day regatta, at Picton, the club was successful in winning maiden fours, maiden pairs, and youths’ fours, and obtained a very good second in the junior fours. At Wellington the club’s representatives were successful in obtaining first place in the youths’ fours, and this crew was the club’s only successful one at the championship regatta. The club was unfortunate in losing several junior and maiden regatta oarsmen it critical periods'of their training. The club was unfortunate in being without a custodian for practically the whole of the season, the res-*t being that the plant fdil into a bad state of repair. Howove'r, a custodian has been, tern porarily secured, and.the boats have been put in first-class repair and are in hotter condition than they have been for some years. An order lias been placed for two practice clinker fours to be delivered before the boginning of the season, and those will complete the club’s requirements in junior plant. The racing plant is in good' order and condition. The club-house is now in a very bad state of repair, the roof being in such a condition that immediate repairs are imperative. The incoming committee will need to consider the question of reuovation generally at an early singe in the new season. The best thanks of the club are extended to the Aramoho Boating Club for the loan of a sculler, the Wanganui Union Boating Club for the loan of oars, and the Wampvnul Rowing Club for its hospitality to members, to the president (Sir Francis Bell), for his annual donation, and to Messrs. E. Pearce and A. do B. Brandon for their valuable donations towards th-' plant. Also to Air. F. Al. Spurdie for | his excellent work as coach, and Mr. C. I G. Sherwood for his gift of a. clock. T'ro ; iclub also wishes to extend it; best thanks | to Mesdames Bayfeild, Evatt, Johnston, j Newton, Wakelin, and Diehl, and to j Miss Wakelin for their kind assistance j nt our social gathrings, and to Airs. A. E. Penreel for her gift of two pictures. The club extends its heartfelt sympathy to the relatives of the late A. I'l. Pearce, J. R. Gibbons, arid P. P. Wczib, all life members of the club. Jinny members will regret to hear of the death of Air. George Leo. for ninny years a faillif’*) servant of the club as custodian, who died at Wellington during the latter end of last year.
