■SIR SAM HUGHES. (Rec. August 25, 10 p.m.) Ottawa, August 24. Obituary— Sir Sam Hughes, formar Canadian Minister' of Defence, after a long illness.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. [Sir Sam Hughes, who was born in Ontario in 1853, was Minister of Militia and Defence from 1911 to 1916. He had been In the active militia since his thirteenth year, and served in tho South African AVar in 1899-1900, being mentioned several times in dispatches, and tn the European War in France in 1914J 5. He personally offered to raise corps for the Egyptian and Sudanese campaigns, the Afghan frontier war, and the Transvaal War. Ho raised. Canadian contingents for the European AVar in 1914-16. In/ 1897-98 he visited. New Zealand and Australia in the interest of colonial assistance in Imperial .wars.]
