LATEST RETURNS ISSUED EXPENDITURE OVERTAKING REVENUE The latest statement of traffic and of revenue and expenditure issued by the Bailway • Department covers the period April 1 to July 23, nearly four months of the current financial year. The cut in railway services has taken place since the termination of this period, and the fi ( -ui‘es, therefore/ are not aflected by the savings that are now being made. The returns show that up to July 23 the position was growing steadily worse. The expenditure for the period amounted to 99.77 per cent, of the revenue, leaving sparcely any return at all on the capital invested in the linos The number of passengers carried on the North Island main lines und , branches during the -period showed a slight increase over the corresponding period of last year, but the revenue from ■ this source 'fell from *£117,106 in 1920 to j *£107,807 in 1921. Tho South Island | main lines and branches carried over 19.000 fewer passengers, and the passenger revenue was .£41,550 for .the 1921 period, as against *£53,087 for tho 1920 period. The revenue from the carriage of goods increased from J. 133,080 io *£138,949 on the North Island mainlines and branches, and. from *£94,816 to *£102,810 on the South Island main lines and branches. The detailed returns for the period aro as follow : —
