THE CALICUT RIOTS
MARTIAL LAW PROCLAIMED VERY GRAVE SITUATION By Telegraph—Press Association—Oopyrignt Delhi, August 23. - Martial law has 'been proclaimed in tho Calicut district, and strong bodies of troops have been drafted in. Great damage was done by the rioters to the railways and public buildings.’ The superintendent of police and a military officer were killed. Indian reinforcements have been mobilised, but the transport of the reinforcements has been impeded by the felling of trees across the roads. The rioters are now being rounded up.— Aus.-N.Z. Tho proclamation of martial law had a sobering effect in file Ernad district, but. the situation is still very grave. A state of open rebellion exists in. certain areas. The military dispositions are proceeding expeditiously. Mr. Austin Joint, the Magistrate at Malapuram, has been murdered. A detachment of the Leinster Regiment is missing.
