ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL
MEETING OF NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL. Mr. C. F. AVard presided over last night’s meeting of tho Council of the New Zealand Football Association, there being also present:—-Messis. 11. Graves, W G. Bryce, F. Campbell, T. M'Laren, and B. L. Salmon (hon. secretary). Tho Otago Football Association was given permission to arrange senior representative fixtures with the Canterbury and Southland Associations and junior fixtures with Canterbury land, Balclutha. Tho match at B’iJclutha is being arranged to foster lhe game in that district, where the association has only made a start this season. The South Auckland Association wrote complaining that they were unable to obtain possession of the Howdeu Cup from the H.untly Club, and asked for the council’s assistance in the matter. It was decided that the club be written to in the matter
Mr. A. E. Gibbs, London, wrote accepting the position of representative to the Football Association
A letter was received from Mr. ,T. AV. Lewis, Masterton, asking for copies of the laws of the game as it had been decided to start, the game in that district. The secretary was -given rhe necessary authority to deal with the matter.
~The AVellington Football Association wrote regarding the expenses of referees in Brown Shield matches, and asked that consideration should be given to a request that the referee for the Auckland Shield game he mutually arranged between the two associations concerned. It was decided that the appointment must be . made by the council, but that both associations be 'written .to -and asked if a Wellington referee would be acceptable.
The Otago Association advised that the following resolution had been carried: "That the N.Z. Council be written to accepting their terms and this association guarantees a sum of £3OO for the Australian tour.” It was requested that one of the matches in Dunedin should be a test match.
The appointment of Mr. B. L. Salmon as sole selector of the New Zealand teams for 1922 was confirmed.
The Otago Association recommended that the rules for the Brown Shield sb mild remain as nt present, but a trophy should be provided for the minor associations. Similar replies were received from the Poverty Bay and South Auckland Associations, Poverty Bay stating that they would like to have a game arranged -fob in Gisborne this season.
The Otago Association wrote that beyond tho usual matches with Canterbury they had been starved for representative matches in the past, and it was considered that tho council should arrange attractive matches for Dunedin next season. The secretary stated that they would get two matches with the Australian eleven next year. The earliest opportunity would also be taken to play an inter-island match in Dunedin. Mr. M. G. M'Tnnes telegraphed asking if challengers for the Skerrett Cup could play registered Rugby players. The secretary stated that he had replied that there was no objection provided there was compliance with the Otago by-laws, and this reply was confirnied
