THE TURF
NOTES AND COMMENTS By Glencos. Owners are reminded that acceptances for the Dannevirke Hunt Club's meeting close on Friday next. While contesting the Selwyn Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday both Will Oakland and Warlike broke down. As usual, all the big prizes at the C.J.C. National meeting went to North Island owners. Air. Eric lliddiford headed the winning list with Xl5OO, earned by Coalition, and then came Mr. AV. R. Kemball with X 1355. After a short spell in the paddock Mort Avis has again been put into work at New Plymouth by P. Coffey. If the conditions are suitable, Rational will have his first raco this season at the Taranaki Hunt Club meeting on September 3. The Absurd three-year-old has been getting through a lot of work at Hawera, and he will be well forward by the time he will be required to measure strides with the champion. The Marton horseman S. Walls was at the head of the list of winning horsemen at Riccarton with four .wins. Next to him came W. Bowden with three wins, while R. Reed and J. R. Kaan each rode a couple. The Mastorton sportsman, Mr. A. JUDonald, is evidently contemplating another trip to the Avondale meeting, as his team has been freely entered for the Cup and Flying Handicaps. Trentham stables are well represented in the Avondale nominations. Flight Commander, Solfanella, Kilrush, and Halifax have been entered for the events for which entries have closed. There was a lot of discussion at Riccarton about the late starting of the concluding event. Tho Rules of Racing provide that the last race must be run by 4.15 p.m., and clubs would do well to note this.
Mr. H. Coyle, who handicaps for the Avondale Jockey Club, has given his opinion as to the respective merits of Mermin and Rational. He assesses the former as 51b. better than Rational in the Flying Handicap at Avondale, their respective weights being Bst. 81b. and Bst. 31b.
Racehorses are selling well in America. In New York, recently twelve horses in training, the property of P. T. Chinn, were sold at auction. Of these nine were two-year-olds, and the total realised was 61,C00 dollars. Even at the old rate of exchange that would be about .£12,100. Ono of the two-year-olds; a colt by Peter Quince, realised 15,000 dollars, and another (by Sweep) 8500 dollars.
As both Rational and Mermin have been nominated for the handicap events at the Avondale J.C. spring meeting, there looks to be every probability* of the pair contesting the Avondale Guineas. This would practically fiiake the race.
Half-way through the programme at Riccarton on Saturday, a, number of two-year-olds were sprinted for a couple of furlongs down the straight. They went away in two batches, and several of the youngesters handled themselves creditably. The first sprint was won by* Mr. G. Gould’s half-sister by Winkie to Palestrina, and F. D. Jones’s Boniform—Peace colt, and Clarenceux—Chartress filly* were well clear of the others in the next division.
The Auckland gelding Cantoris raced very consistently at the Grand National meeting. Ho was in the money each day, his record being made up of a win, .*: second, and a third.
Nobleman may be given the opportunity to again distinguish himself with thq colours up. Recently he has been treated to road exercise by R. Hatch. His prospects, however, of regaining his old form do not look bright. A Press Association cable message from London states, that Lemonora will not run in the St. 'Leger.
