KHANDALLAH’S WANTS
THROUGH ARTERIAL ROAD AND PUBLIC BATHS. Khandallah is now part of Wellington City, and two of its chief wants (apart from drainage and water) are a new arterial Toad —one that will take tho place of the extremely dangerous and narrow Ngahauranga Gorge Road and public baths. Several routes have been submitted for tho new road. Three ideas are in the melting pot, viz., one that will take off from the Kaiwarra Road, up tho gully, and thread through Ngaio and Khandallah, and so on to Johnsonville; a second is a graded take off the Hutt Road between Kaiwarra and Ngahauranga, which would, it is said, open up a lot of good building land on top of tho hills between the harbour and Khandallah; and another is a proposal to uso the lower part ot tho present Gorge Road, and follow a new road up the hill at a point above Dimock’s factory. A new through road was provided for in the loan schedule so wore many other works which have ffad to stand down for the present. Next to a through road, public baths are wanted. These, it is believed, could be very simply and economically provided by deciding on a site in the Domain, and damming the stream. Having selected a site, it would be necessary to concrete Rio bed of the stream for a certain distance and put in a small dam. There is some question of water rights of those living below the sito of tho baths, but It is believed any objections on that score could be overcome, as for six or seven months of tho year the stream would 'be Tiffining as usual, by the flow passing through the baths and over the by-wash of the dam.
