SINKING OF A BRITISH STEAMER BEA COMMUNICATIONS OPENED By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Rec. August 4, 1.20 a.m.) London, August 2. The Board of Trade inquiry into the sinking of the British steamer Spathari, off the Portuguese coast, on April 19, found that the chief engineer, Thomas Mailley, wilfully scuttled the ship by opening the sea communications with the engine room. The master and officers did not try to ascertain the cause of the leak, and prematurely abandoned the vessel. Mailley’s certificate was cancelled. and the master’s suspended for three months. There was no proof that the owner was • inculpated.—Reuter.
