SUGAR PRICES

THE NEW GOVERNMENT . CONTRACT JAVA SUGAR DEARER The details of the new contract between the Government and the Colonial Sugar Company have not yet been announced, but there is good reason for believing that the price of sugar is going to be reduced by at least a penny a pound when the new arrangements come into operation. It appears that the operation of tho new price is being delayed by the cautious attitude of some traders and many housewives, who are reducing their purchases of sugar at the present price. The Government nV propose to make a loss on sugar manufactured under the old contract, and the stocks brought forward have to go into consumption before the lower price rules. A few weeks ago much was being eaid about cheap Java Sugar, and it was suggested that the’ Government was committing the country to pay a higher price for Fijian sugar than was necessary in view of quotations from JavaSince then Java sugar has jumped quite suddenly by £617 a ton, and if any orders have been sent from New Zealand they probably will be filled only at the increased! price, which will not permit of the sugar being sold in New Zealand at -any substantial reduction on the new Government price.
