ARTERIAL ROADS
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —In discussing the Government's forecast of the proposed new Highways Bill, you and your motoring correspondent based your estimates upon figures given in my letter dated July 18. Those figures were the result of a practical knowledge of the subject, but as I did not contemplate so bold a scheme being put forward I fear tho totals arrived at for the 2600 miles are under the mark. I only know a small part of the routes, but anyone who has been over them can make up a serviceable rough estimate from the details given at the close Of my letter. He may have to add something for exceptional works of bridging, etc. I see that my “nom de plume” foul hooked "Maori,” and that my letter gave him a pain. The word “Genie" is commonly used in connection with the French army, and its correct interpretation (to which 1 have some claim) is given in the "Vocabulary of Engineering Terms,” issued hy the British War Office in 1916. "Maori" is wrong in assuming that "natiohal control" means "automobile association control.” He may class himself with kings and editors, but his letter is a compound of cheap, misdirected humour and unconsidored destructive criticism, and gives no indication that the author has any knowledge of the subject under discussion or honest, desire to further the cause of good roads. —I am, etc., GENIE. August 2, 1921.
