THE NEW PLYMOUTH WRECKAGE
BITS OF A VESSEL WASHED ASHORE.
The Marino Department has received word that further wreckage, consisting of twelve large carved pieces of timber, from 12ft. to lift, in length, and thought to be tho ribs of a largo vessel, have been washed up on the beach at Awakino, north of New Plymouth. Through the ribs were driven galvanised iron spikes, two feet in length, by one inch, and a number of wooden pegs. The pegs were wedged on one end, where the planking appears to have been secured. There are also a number of large wooden planks, some of them 20 feet long; they appear to have been broken by heavy seas. Several of the planks show signs of having been painted dark red. A large wooden block, 2ft. Gin. long and 16in, square, with two largo staples driven in on one side, has also been Avashed up. It appears tho block was used for mixing paint, as there is white, red, and green paint on one side. The block and the planking are of Oregon. Tho opinion is expressed that the wood has been in tho water for a long time. Residents on tho coast tiro keeping a look-out for further wreckage.
