17r. Sihel Smyth, tho composer, created history by conducting the band of 160 students and pupils of Kneller Hall Military School of Music. No woman has been invited previously by the military authorities to act as bandmistress. '.the occasion was tho first performance of her overture to “The Wreckers,” as arranged for a military band by Colonel Stretton, the director of music. The bandsmen were grouped on a staircase stand on a lawn surrounded by trees, and Dr. Smyth stood on a huge box in front. Iler inofulxis of conducting were distinctly virile (says an, exchange), and the perfermanco was so successful that she expressed her appreciation to the band be fore she laid down the baton.
