NEW TECHNICAL COLLEGE

A PUBLIC APPEAL £6OOO WANTED AT ONCE The organisation of the appeal for funds to proceed with the erection of a new Technical School in Wellington has now been placed on a definite basis. At a meeting held in the Mayor's room yesterday morning the following committee was appointed Chairman, Mr. 11. A. Wright, M.P.; hon. secretary, Mr. G. Mitchell, M.P-- hon. treasurer, Mr. J. R. Palmer; committee, Messrs. F. Ball linger, L. M'Kenzie, W. H. Bennett, J. H. Howell. T. Forsyth, H. Bolton, and L. R. Partridge. An appeal issued by the committee reiterates the fact that the sum of £15,000 was granted by the Government and £15,000 by the Wellington City Council. The Government money has been spent, and, in addition, commitments total £7OOO-.£22,000 to date. The council is now providing £5OOO, and cannot do more at present. Even with that amount the commitments are not covered. The Government can do no more just now, so unless the public will come forward and help tho work must stop. Tho sum of £12,000 would complete tho new building to a stage which would make it fit for use. The building now occupied, lamentably unsuited to the purpose, could then ne given up, and the sum of £350 a year in rent would be saved. Unless the money is forthcoming, the men will be discharged, thus adding many more to tho list of unemployed. In addition, much of the boxing and other work already in hand would bo wasted. The committee is anxious to avoid what it thinks would be a calamity. The committee believes that the people of Wellington will show tho same publie spirit as tho people of other centres. It confidently appeals, ‘ therefore, for £6009, which will carry a Government subsidy of £6000—£12,000 in all-sufficient to ereef the north-west wing. Messrs. J. H. Howell and J. S. Swan have each lent £5OO free of interest for three years. Straight-out contribution® to the funds are acknowledged from the following £ s. d. T. Ballinger 104 0 0 J. H. Howell 100 0 0 J. S.
