TRADE WITH HAWAII

MARKET FOR FROZEN MEAT SYDNEY GETS BENEFIT OF STEAMER SERVICE The Council of the Central Chamber of Commerce had before it yesterday thj , following letter from the Board of Trade "Regarding trade with Hawaii, you will recollect that the Union Company recently advised that they hoped to guarantee space for 150 tone of frozen meat each month all the year round, and that this allocation would not be affected by Vancouver shipments. That information was cabled to the manager of the import and export department of Pan-Paoiflo Trades, Ltd., Honolulu, who has replied as follows:—'We thank you very kindly for the interest you have taken in Having sent us a cablegram, reading as follows—" Niagara. Makura. now taking all refrigerated mlrgotw offering for Honolulu. U.S.S. Co. hope space can bo guaranteed, 150 tons meat /'very month, even when Vancouver shipments commence October." We had your cablegram published, and our papers here favourably commented upon the slight advance we have made, no doubt by constantly hammering away nt the Union S.S. Co. It was the writer’s experience during many years in business in New Zealand, that we could only get a modicum of attention hy constantly worrying the company. We are quite aware that you at your end are doing your best to make the trade between New Zealand and Honolulu more effective. We at this end have quite succeeded in increasing the quantity of New Zealand meat shipped to here, and the writer hopes that ultimately he will be able to displace the meat that has been carried here for some time from Sydney. We shall be glad of any further information you can give us,at any time, either by cable or by letter.' "I forward this reply for the information of the members of your chamber. The chairman (Mr. H. Hart) said that the Union Company needed ft good deal of prodding to keep up to the work. For som-e time past the steamers, particularly on the San Francisco service, had not occn suitable to the trade. It behoved them to do what they could to keep the Island trade alive. Mr. C. J. Ward said that the steamers on the Vancouver service, which called at Auckland, loaded up at Sydney. Tho chairman said it was unfortunate that Auckland was only''regarded as n port of call. The steamers were a week at Sydney and only stayed a day at Auckland, which did not give Auckland a chance to load much cargo. Mr Ward said that the arrangement did not seem to be right. He suggested that they should communicate with the Auckland Chamber of Commerce on the subject: This was agreed to.
