DAVIS CUP
BELGIUM’S DEFAULT PUTS JAPAN IN SEMI-FINALS THE CANADA-AUSTRALIA TIE By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright New York, July 20. The Davis Cup Committee has announced that the Belgians are unable to come to America. Their default puts Japan in the semi-finals.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. Toronto, July 19. Judging from the Australian Davis Cup team’s form in the Ontario championship games, the opinion here is that Canada has a better chance of surviving the elimination games than was formerly conceded. Only two Canadians as yet have been chosen—Bennett and Holmes, of Winnipeg, who were defeated in the doubles final by Todd and Peach (Australia). The Canadian, pair were beaten, fr-4, 5—7, 5-7, 7—5, 6—4. Todd has shown excellent form, but the other Aus. tralians are patchy.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
