IRISH PROBLEM
NEGOTIATIONS REPORTED TO HAVE BROKEN DOWN GOVERNMENT’S BASIS OF SETTLEMENT By Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright. London, July 20. It is reported that the negotiations with Mr. de Valera have, broken down. Certainly there are clear indications that they are not progressing satisfactorily. The cheery demeanour of tho British Ministers has given place to obvious do prossion. It is unofficially stated that the visiting Prime Ministers have been invited to help readjust the situation, but only General Smuts agreed. Mr. Lloyd George to-night submitted to Cabinet details of his conversations wih Mr. de Valera, including written proposals representing the Govornment’s basis of settlement,, which if adopted will be handed to Mr. de Valera to-morrow.—-Aus.-N.Z. Following a protracted Cabinet meeting this evening, at which the terms to he submitted to Mr. de Valera were drawn up, Mr. Lloyd l George motored to Buckingham Palace to lay them before the King.—Aus.-N.Z. Colonel Gretton has joined tho Independent Unionists, following similar action by Izeut.-Colonel Archer-Shee, on the ground that he takes exception to the Government’s handling of the Irish question. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. (Rec. July 21, 10.30 p.m.) London, July 21. Colonel Gretton left the Coalition as a protest against the Government negotiating with Mr. de Valera. Forty Unionists in the House of Commons will interview Mr. Chamberlain today, demanding a statement regarding tho security of Ulster, Imperial supremacy, and the Irish liability for tho war debt.—Aus.-N.Z.
