LAND AND ESTATE AGENTS

NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION’S ANNUAL MEETING.

The annual meeting of tho Dominion Estate Agents and I*and Auctioneers Association of New Zealand was held yesterday, Mr. A. A. Gellatly (Wellington). president, occupying the chair. Also present were Messi’s. Brydon, Harrop and Clayton (Auckland), Stanley and Gribble (Waikato), Lynskey and Humphries (Taranaki), Pallot (Hawke’s Bay), A. L. Wilson and Stott (Wellington), H. XV. He.slop (Canterbury). The president’s report stated that the income for the year was £ll6 Bs. 6d„ and tho expenditure £lOO 16s. 9d., leaving a further amount of £l5 Ils. Ski. tobe added to the accumulated fund, which now stands at £37 5«. 7d. "With one exception all tho subscriptions were paid prior to the close of the financial year. The formation of an association in Hawke’s Bay had completed the •bringing of the whole of the North Island under WiMation with the New Zealand Association. The president added that with tho secretary he had waited on .the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. Downie Stewart) and urged that the proposed new Land Agents Bill should be brought before the next session of Parliament, and subsequently representatives of the Otago Association waited on the Minister in Dunedin with a similar request. In response to these desires the Minister agreed to bring down an amending Bill next session and do his best to havq it enacted, provided no unduly controversial amendments ar? put forward which the Government might not be willing to accept. This was most satisfactory, and the association was to be congratulated at such material progress being made in the attainment of its efforts in this direction. It would however be necessary to give their most serious, and earnest consideration to tho matter at the annual meeting, s# ns to assist Ate. Stewart in every possible' way, and to see that no vital portion of their proposals are omitted from the Bill during its passage through Parliament. Tho report and balance-sheet were adopted. In reference to the Rent Restriction Act it was decided that an effort be made to have the present Landlord and Tenants Act amended owing to numerous Court cases, etc., showing that the operation of the Act was ineffective in meeting tho defined objects of the Act, as building by landlords for occupation by tenants had quite censed. It was also decided to send a letter to the Minister pointing out that the Act was deficient in what it was instituteci for, and should now be repealed, and pointing out further that if this were done a large number of houses which are now empty would bo at once lot, and further building would be undertaken.

It was decided that it was desirable that affiliated associations should hnve a uniform tariff for the whole Dominion.

It was resolved to again anproach tho Government and urge the dosirab’eness of having unsold Crown and Native lands placed in the hands of laud agents.

There was a lengthy discussion on the proposals in tho Land Agents Bill now before tho Government.

The following officers were elected:— President, Mr. A. A. Ge’lntlv; vice-pre-sidents, Messrs. Er. C. Stanley and H. W. Heslop; treasurer, Mr. S. Harcourt; auditor, Mr. E. IV. Hunt; committee.
