RUGBY MANAGEMENT

WELLINGTON COMMITTEE TROUBLE AT MIRAMAR The Management} Committee of the Wellington Rugby Union met larft night. Mr. J. Prendovillo presided, and there wore also present Messrs. E. Perry, H. C. .Buck, G. Jackson, F. A. Lavrs, IV. J. Maidham, E. H. Ward, 11. M'Leod, and N. Millard. Applications for the use of Athletic Park for a match Mines Department, v. Public Health and Valuation Was refused. A similar application in respect of s match .between Government Life Insurance and Combined Life Insurance Offices was dealt with in the same way. The chairman remarked that other grounds were available, and that the Park etill hud to undergo a good doal of hard use. A Johnsonville player who was reported by the referee to have struck a Berliftmpofe player in a junior match appeared before the committee. Ho alleged that his opponent struck him first. "I was unlucky," he remarked. "I was caught." The incident occurred about a month ago. Mr. Laws contended that the player should not b 6 dealt with at last Hight’s meeting ns the referee was not present. The meeting decided otherwise, and suspended the player till the end of the season? Several officials jind players <of the Miramar Football Club appeared before the committee in answer to a summons arising out of a report made by the refer,eo upon the fourth grade match Miramar v. Institute, played at Miramar. Tho referee alleged in his letter that eomo of the Miramar players used bad language and disputed his decisions. The attitude of these players and of the Miramar supporters was such,, he stated, that he finished the game fifteen minutes bfore the time for "ho side." He concluded his report with the suggestion that in future M!/amar Club matches should bo played on city grounds, "where protection was provided.” Tho reply of the Miramar Club secretary was that tho referee was the Institute coach, that he let matters go on till he lost control of the game, and that ho endeavoured to regain control first by appealing to the players, then by penalising one side and not tho other. "There seems to he something wrong in tho control of this ground. It’s your club ground, and we draw fixtufos there to suit your convenience,” remarked Mr. Prendoville.

"If language was used, it was used on both sides," replied the club secretary. Mr. Prendoville: There is the fact that your team slip did not agree with names reported. Some of your higher grade players were not engaged On. that day, and the inference might bo drawn that you filled up with them. The secretary: That could not be so, because they were all playing for otherteams.

Mr. Prendeville: Well, we want a list of your third grade players, ami a statement of where they were playing. There mny be a little trouble for other clubs then. . . . There seems to -be something wrong with tho management of this ground. The referees must be protected.

Not all tho Mirathar men required to attend the meeting were present. It was decided that the suspension of the club should he removed, and that the club captain, the secretary, tho team captain, and two players who were reported to have been "ordered off" should be summoned to attend oh Tuesday next, when the referee would be present. Mr. G. W. Slade, chairman, Mr. H. E. Combs,, secretary, and Messrs. E. Wylie, E. Little, and H. Paton, members of tho New Zealand Rugby Union, attended in order to discuss details of the arrangements for the Springboks’ match at Athletic Park on Saturday.
