FERTILISER EXPERIMENTS

USE OF CARBONIC ACID GAS. (Roc. July. 20, 1.30 am.) Londons July 18. The “Westminster Gazette’s” Berlin correspondent states that Gorman scientists are working on the problem of making two blades of grass grow instead of ono, by the application of carbonic acid gas. Experiments in .turning the ground blast furnaces into glass-houses and eown fields have been so successful that special nurseries havo been established. in connection with Hugo Stinncs’s emelting works at Horst. Tho plant substance is increased by the gas from 56 to 360 per cent. The gases from 1100 tons of coke are sufficient to produce 4600 tons of edible plant matter, but as vast equipment and distributing tubes are necessary, the experimenters sea no immediate practical use only in fertilising certain root and high value food plants in small areas. —Reuter.
