OBITUARY

MRS. LILY MAY ATKINSON. There will be widespread regret in Wellington and in many parts of ths Dominion at tho announcement of the death of Mrs. Lily May Atkinson, wife of Mr. A. R. Atkinson, solicitor, which took place yesterday .evening. Although Airs. Atkinson had not boon in good health for some time her friends did not anticipate this ending, and the news has come as a great shock to them. In all matters affecting tho welfare of women and children Mrs. Atkinson had taken a prominent and in many cases a leading pail. Numerous women’4 organisations have benefited by her help and advice, and her knowledge of the many issues which were involved in their activities was of very great help to them. As a- public speaker she was noted, and into the cause of prohibition she threw herself heart ami soul. Apart from her public activities she did much work in a quiet way unknown to ths world at large. Mir. Atkinson was born in Auckland on May 29 1806. and was educated at Airs, breenwood’s private school for K’rls, Violhng-. ion She was married to Mr. A. h. Atkinson on May 5 1900. Atkinson had been a member of the D.L. t.u. from 1886 to date, and recording secretary from 1857 to 1891, and again this rear. She was New Zealand president from 1902 to 1905. Mrs. Atkinson was vice-president of the New Zealand Alliance from 1895. and when her husband was elected president of the alliance at tho last annual mating it was stated that the honour was a tribute also to the excellent york done by Airs. Atkinson. Airs. Atkinson was a member of the Alliance Executive from 1893 to date. She was a member of the National Campaign Committee in 1919 and a member of the Wellington Prohibition league from its foundation. The late Mrs. Atkinson was also icr manv years president of the Society fot tho Protection of Women and Children, and was re-elected in 1920. She was president of the Pioneer Club from 1914 to 1919, and also a member of tho recently-appointed Board of Appeal ln connection with the censorship of picture films.
