FIRE AT NEWTOWN
OLD COUPLE’S DANGER HUSBAND BADLY BURNED A. fire fraught with serious consequences to an old couple occurred at Nowtown in the early hours of yesterday morning. Tho outbreak took place at 72 Wright Street, in a house occupied by Henry Frederick Norris, a retired Government messenger, and his wife. They retired at 7 o’clock on Saturday evening, leaving a fire burning in the kitchen grate. Air. and Airs. Norris occupied separate rooms, and at about 1 a.m. Airs. Norris was awakened by the fire. The house was then full of smoke, and in .the face of grave danger tho old lady rushed into her husband’s room, in order to arouse him.
They both escaped from the burning building, but Air. Norris, who made his exit by lumping though a window, was cut by the broken glass. He was also burned about the head and legs. Mrs. Norris escaped injury. Air. Norris, who is aged 86 years, was admitted to the hospital at 2 a.m., and late last night he was reported to have taken a favourable turn. The building, which was owned by Airs. Joseph Knight, contained six rooms. The fire, brigade received the call at 1.2 a.m.. and on arrival on the scene found that'the frames had a strong hold. The house end contents were severely damaged. and tho exterior of No. 74, an adjoining house, occupied by Air. Walsh, was somewhat scorched. The house was insured, in the A' ictoria office for £2oo, but there was no insurance on the furniture. Air. njd Mrs. Norris are, therefore, heavy losers. A MINOR OUTBREAK.
At 9.50 a.m. yesterday the brigade received a call to the new telephone exchange, Upland Road, Kelburn, where they extinguished an outbreak of fire amongst a quantity of packing straw in one of the rooms. Some of the contents were slightly damaged. ’ ROOMS GUTTED BY FIRE By Telegraph—Press Association. Feilciing, July 16. C. N. N. Broad’s dentistry rooms were gutted by firo last night. They were insured for £B5O in the Northern Office. The damage done was over twice that amount.
