NEW COMMITTEE SET UP. A report upon the memorial cathedral which is to be erected in Wellington was before the Diocesan Synod last night. The Cathedral Committee stated: “The sum-of £37,075 Ils. 2d. hns been promised, of which sum £13,967 Gs. has been collected in cash, shares, and war loan bonds. The organising secretary returned from England, 'and reported that the sum of £3711 16s. 3d. had been subscribed up to the time of leaving England, end that he had been able to leave an organisation behind him, and p- further sum of £lOOO had come in since his departure “After certain modifications, including the reduction in size of the military chapel, the plans of the cathedral were approved by the Cathedral Committee. “In view of the fact that many promises of considerable amount are outstanding, the Cathedral Committee fee, that great Josses may occur unless 1 start is made on some definite part oi the cathedral as early as possible aftoi conditions with regard to labour ana costs have become more favourable. “But having regard to the present financial stringency, it is felt that it is better to defer the building of any part of the main cathedral for the present, and concentrate on the military chapel. The committee therefore recommends the establishment of a million half-crou fund, thus giving an opportunity for all to take part." Xn view of the fact that it had fulfilled tile duties delegated to it in 1917, the committee invited the Synod to establish a new committee generally to act in connection with the erection of the cathedral. The Synod appointed the following committee:—His Lordship the Bishop. Ven. Archdeacon Innes Jones, the Revs. C. F. Askew, J. G. S. Bartlett. H. A. Favell. W. F. Grove, A. L. Hansell, H. XV.
