ORPHANAGE WORK
STATEMENT BY MINISTER. By Telegraph. —Press Association. ’Christchurch, June 27. Referring to the recent protests against the Government’s proposals in regard to orphanages, tho Hon. C. J. Parr said: "I am not going to do anything to hurt the orphanages.. A good deal of unnecessary steam is being blown off by some of my friends in the Churches. The policy is controlled by me, not by the departmental officei whose report has caused some of my friends to “get the wind up.” Cabinet controls tho legislation in regard to orphanages. As a matter of fact, there Lre only thirty-four orphans who have lost, both parents in the Church orphanage’s of Now Zealand, whereas in St«ty institutions there are more than 599 such orphans, who are mainly in splendid foster-homes. I may remark also that, the private orphanages are saving money to the Government.”
