GOOD PAY
TRAMM’AYMEN’S EARNINGS. Mr. A. L. Monteith/ secretary of the Tramway Employees’ Union, has .jbeei) correcting the Mayor (Mr. R. A. M’ligh., M.P.) for stating something which Mr. M’right says he ne%r stated. Mr. Monteith said that ’*»• Wright was wrong in saying that £6 Is. 3d. per week was tile lowest wage earned by a conductor, whereas £4 9s. was the wage a flrst-year conductor earned without overtime, lhe Mayor’s statement was to the effect- that £6 Is. 3d. was the lowest wage earned by a truiiiwayman taking advantage of the usual overtime worked in the service The wage of motormen and conductors varied according to their length of service, and the overtime worked. From a list taken out of the pay register there were motormen earning (all the year round) as much as £7 13s. 10d., £7 ss. 9d„ £7 Is. 6d.. £6 17s. 3d., and so on per week, whilst Hie majority of conductors draw between £6 nnd £6 Bs. per week. The Mayor had no desire to delude anyone as to what wages were bein" paid *he men, but is quite sure that" in quoting figures he mentioned overtime in.
