NATIONAL DAIRY SHOW

BUTTER AND CHEESE AWARDS EXHIBITS OF HIGH QUALITY (By Telegraph—Special Reporter.) Palmerston North, June 20. ; Although the nineteenth annual winter sht-V of the Manawatu and West Coast A and P. Association, held in conjunction with the National Dairy Association, does not open until to-morrow, the results of the judging in connection with the butter nnd cheese exhibits were made available to-day. The entries in the butter classes are considerably larger than they were last year, but there is a falling off in the number of entries in the cheese section. The judge’s remarks show that but little fault can lie found with the quality of either, the only complaint being as to the get-up of the cheese for storage purposes. Since the last fihow considerable improvements have been made in the grounds and the buildings, which had become somewhat shabby, are now resplendent with new paint, while the main walks have been gravelled, and the low portions drained. For the first time since the war, tlie Agricultural Department has a. big exhibit covering some 5000 square feet, and this should be of considerable educative value to farmers generally. Hoots are much- more in evidence than they wore last year, nnd the exhibits already staged form a most creditable show. The vea tlier has been almost summer-like during the past few days, and though at the time of writing ram is falling it is hoped that the fixture will be 7for better weather than has been the case for some years.

Judge’s Remarks on Dairy Produce. Quality, as represented in <he butter classes, was of a high standard say the judges the flavour of the majority being very uniform, only a few entries showing the effect of the storage period. lhe body of the butter was very fine, and an outstanding feature of the our, salting and general get-up.left no thing to bo desired. . k,llowing are the judges’ J*™* 9 respect to cheese:-The quality of the winning exhibits leaves little to ho desired The general appearance of the majority of the entries was satisfactory, hut in somo instances badly crocked r nds were “n evidence, and this feature h a 3 a detrimental effect on stored cheese. rX- flavour in most exhibits compares favourably with that of previous shows, and the body and texture of the winners is exceedingly good Following is the list of awards: • 'butter in New Zealand.
