CIVIC ESTIMATES
OVER A QUARTER OF A MILLION RIGID ECONOMY TO BE PRACTISED It is understood that the City Council estimates on the expenditure side for the current financial year amount to about •£260,000. This is a larger stun than last Jfear, 'but 'Miramar land Karori have now to be taken into consideration, and with the new rates becoming due ratepayers in all districts will expect a fair ■hara of the expenditure. The new Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wright) Iras found the city burdened with a considerable overdraft running into over =-£200,000, showing that lately at all events the city has not been living within its income. 'His intention is that it must and shall live within its income. The estmates will bo submitted to the City Council on Thursday evening, and when passed the. new rates will be struck. It is not anticipated that any material reductions will bo made, though it is certain that the present rates on the new capital value of the city will return a sum equal to the amount required by the estimated expenditure, plus the grant for the Hospital and Charitable Aid Hoard.
