FIREBLIGHT THE FRUITGROWERS’ DEMANDS A DEPUTATION TO THE MINISTER Representatives of the Fruitgrowers Conference met the Minister of Agriculture (Hon. W. Nosworthy) on Saturday morning, and placed before him the decisions of the conference with reference to fireblight. They were introduced Uy Ur. 11. Atmore, M.P. The speakers urged the seriousness of 'he danger that confronted the fruit, industry. The legislation that had been passed by Parliament last year was of some assistance to the industry, but more was required if fruitgrowers were to receive the protection that they required. The continued spread of fireblight '.would threaten the industry with extinction. . The Minister said that.he recognised the importance of the matter. The Agricultural Department had given a great, deal of attention to fireblight, and he recognised ihat the total eradication of hawthorn was necessary if the disease was to be destroyed. But n step of Ulis kind was not easy. He would place the representations of the fruitgrowers before Cabinet, and he could assure the deputation that he and his Department • would do whatever was. possible to protect the fruit-growing industry.
