THE STRIKING OF THE ATUA
MASTER COMMENDED FOR PROMPT ACTION. (Rec. June 10, 9.5 p.m.) Suva, June 10. The. Court of Inquiry found that the steamer Atua struck an uncharted coral head. There was no default or wilful neglect by the master, whose prompt action in beaching the vessel w as commended.—Press Assn. DETAILS OF THE DISASTER. Auckland, June 10. Details of the mishap of the Atua show that the vessel cleared Bega passage and hit hard, lurching heavily. Kept going with the momentum, the vessel struck again twice with less force, nnd got back into deep water. Within four minutes there were seven feet of water in No. 2 hold. The captain beached her on a good bottom inside the reef, and during the night the water had come to within a foot of the ’tween decks. About SOO tons of sugar had beebme ruined. The diver found a large dent and a hole on the bilge. Later, the steamer was pumped dry and refloated.—Press Assn.
