THEFT BY SHIP’S STEWARD
Thomas Albert Drake appeared in the Magistrate’s Court before Air. F, K. Hunt, 8. AT., yesterday, charged with stealing six forks, five teaspoons, a teapot, a sauce bottle, and a quantity of linen of tho total value of .£l9, the property of tho Union Steam Ship Company. The Chief Detective stated that towards the latter end x>f last year the accused was a steward on tho s.s. Pateona, and it was from that vessel that tho goods were taken. The ac.cus.ed had since been working on the wharf, and when Detective Tricklebank visited tho premises occupied by him the stolen articles were found there.
Drake pleaded guilty and said that when the Pateena was taken off the running he had no opportunity of replacing flic goods, as ho had intended doing. He had recently taken his discharge from the Mftheno and had come to Wellington to make a homo for his young wife. Ho further stated that ho had not previously bean before the Court, and askod that 'ho should be treated under the First Offenders Act. \ The Magistrate: I am tired bf applying tho First Offenders Act; it does no good. You will be sentenced to a month’s imprisonment.
