DERBY DAY PROSPECTS

ONE OF THE FAVOURITES AMISS. (Rec. June 1, 5.5 p.m.) London, Alay 31. There are prospects of a record "Derby Day,” and excursions to Epsom have already commenced. There will be no race trains owing to the coal strike, visitors using motor-cars and charabancs, with hundreds of omnibuses and taxi-cabs. The road traffic is being specially organised. . Under the supervision of the airship R 33 wireless telegraphy and telephony will be used to report the race, the airship -sending out regular messages.. The King and Queen, instead of quietly entering the grandstand, will enter at the Tottenham corner, driving along the course, to the grandstand. There has been a betting sensation in regard to Alan Break, one of the favourites and short odds are offered against him running. His owner states that Jia has developed trouble in a heel. NOTES AND COMMENTS Br GlencosThose who intend being present at Otaki to-morrow should note that there will be three special trains from Thorndon, viz., at 7.46 a.m., 8.33 a.m., and 8.45 a.in. The first event will start at IL3O a.m., and the last race will be run at 4 p.m.

Racing at Ellerslie to-morrow will start at 11 a.m., when the first division of the Jervois Handicap will be run.

A. Oliver left Awapuni at the weekend with Nursing Sister and Asterina, who are to race at Ellerslie.

R. Thompson has been engaged to ride Powder King in the Great Northern Hurdles to be decided to-morrow.

Amongst those being schooled over hurdles at Riccarton are Counter-Attack, Cerberus, and Hfero.

Demonte, a full-brother to Creme de Menthe, won a mile race at Sandown Park last month, and Victorian writers are now proclaiming him a good stayer. Piedmont, sire of tho pair named, won several races over 12 furlongs in England.

Tractor, who is to race in Mi-. H. W. Brown’s colours, is by the unbeaten Tetrarch, from Gravitation, a full sister to William the Third. Tractor is a very big three-year-old, and alreaay is over 16 hands, v-hich some enhes think may not mean a very long career as a racehorse.

Secretary A. E. Whyte, of the Wellington Racing Club, left yesterday for. Auckland, and will bo present at the Great Northern meeting at Ellerslie. Owners and breeders of yearlings should note that entries for the principal weight-for-age races in Sydney and Melbourne, close on Tuesday next. New Zealand owners can enter their yearlings with any metropolitan club secretary. W. Feilding has been engaged .to ride the Porirua-trained Chummy in his engagements at the Otaki meeting. Golden Prince, who scored in the Otago Steeplechase at Hie Dunedin meeting yesterday, had not liecn pleasing m his work this season. In his previous efforts Golden Prince had not been partial to a three miles journey.

Easily the best gallop of the morning at Ellerslie on Tuesday was done by the Cornwall Handicap candidate Demcw, who had a big weight in the eaddle when he ran half a mile in 51 3-srec. G. Clarke is to have tho mount on Friday. Rorke’s Drift, winner of the big handicap at’ AVingatui yesterday, scored one other success this season, and that was in the handicap at Gore in March. Rorke’s Drift is by Calibre, and as he won the Dunedin Cup in 1916, and is now nine yeare old, it must be said that he is lasting well. Tho annual meeting of the South Wairarapa Trotting Club is to be held on the Tauherenikau racecourse to-moriow, and an interesting day’s racing is promised trotting enthusiasts There will be excursion trains from AVellington. Ihe first race will start at 11.10 a.m.
