LOWER HUTT COURT
The monthly sitting of the Lower Hutt Magistrate’s Court was held yesterday, Mr. E. Page, S.M., and Mr. J. Pearoc, J.P., presiding. Thomas M'Grath was fined £5, and costs 55., for using indecent language. For failing to send his children to school regularly, P. Childs was fined 10s., and costs 14s.
Exceeding tho motor-car speed limit was responsible for the following being each fined £l, and costs 7s.:—E. C. Brash, W. Boyle, W. Hermanns. M. Shaw, J. J. O’Donehue, E. B. Wemyss, and W. N. Edkins. After hearing tho evidence in the cases of Guy Johnston and A. A. Moore (two charges) the Bench dismissed the informations, holding that there was a reasonable element of doubt, of which defendants would be given the benefit.
Failure to provide their bicycles with lights after ennset cost L. Dwan, C. Bond, E. Jones, J. Mason, J. M'Lellan, and A. J. Webster, each 10s., and costs 75.; J. Hagart ss. and costs 7a. For riding a motor cycle without a light attached, L. Sanders was fined £l, and costs 7s. For permitting stock to wander, F. Meyrick and F. Twomey were each fined £l, and 7s. costs. Similar breaches of tho bv-law, cost the following each 10s., and costs 7s.:—A. Burt, W. A. Cottle, W. J. Ryan, F. Twomey, and the AVestland Timber Co.
Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following undefended civil actions:—Willoughby Knight v. 11. AV. Jordan, £49 35., costs £4 6s. 6d.; B. J. Dudley v. 14. E. Davenport, £4 45., costs £1 ss. Cd. E. J. Dalton was ordered to give up possession of a tenement to Agnes Muriel Murdoch in six weeks, and pay costs £1 16s. In another case, AV. S. Marlon v. W. G. Ross, an order for possession at the expiration of two months was made. PETONE SITTING. A short sitting tho Petone Court, over which Messrs. A. Coles nnd A. Anderson, J.P.’s, presided, was held yesterday. Minnie O'Connor, alias Pines, who was charged with having escaped from the Point Halswell Prison on April 28 last, was, on the application of the police, remanded to appear at AVellington ■ on June 13.
A charge of being found in a drunken condition while in charge of a horse and cart at S p.m. on Monday, was preferred against Jeremiah Afyers. There were no lights attached to the cart, and it was stated that through defendant’s negligence a collision with a motor bus occurred. Fortunately there were no passengers in the bus at the lime, hut Myers was thrown from the cart, and was badly shaken. Defendant pleaded guilty. The Bench inflicted a fine of £2, in tiefault seven days’ imprisonment. Rolwrt Rutherford, who had accompanied Afyers on a drinking bout, was convicted. nnd fined £l, in default IS hours’ imprisonment.
