CATS AND DIPHTHERIA

Eor a long time the cat lias been under suspicion as a probable source of. outbreaks of diphtheria. Now it appears that the accusation was merely slander. Dr. Savage read a paper to the Royal Sanitary Institute outlining experiments which, he says, refute the. existing belief. He took swabbings from the throats of kittens and cats, and he found a germ which at first sight could easily be mistaken for diphtheria. Under careful teat it was found not to be the diphtheria germ. Next, the doctor tried to infect cats and kittens with diphtheria. He fed them repeatedly with highly virulent cultures. * Their throats were brushed with swabs ooverod with the diphtheria baeilia grown direct from human cases. Tn not one instance did a cat contract the disease, and, in fact, in every case the throat was quite clear within 24 hours. A number of even more severe tests were carried out, and, according to tho lecturer, he found it impossible to give a cat diphtheria.
