REFEREES CONFER. The annual conference of the New Zealand Referees’ Association was held, yesterday afternoon in the Y.Af.C.A. rooms. Mr. D. Af’Kenzie (Wellington) presided, and other delegates present were: Alessrs. J. Aloffitf (Wellington), A. E. Hall (Wairarapa), E. D. Berry (Bay of Plenty), B. Edwards (Nelson), C. E. Fisk (Marlborough), L. W. Guinoy (Can* terbury), F. I’oster (South Canterbury), D. Stalker (Southland). A. G. Sha.’w CWhakatanc), AV. O’Neill (Hastings), V. Higgins (Horowhenua), A. W. Thompson (Manawatu).
In briefly traversing the activities of tho association the chairman spoke of the necessity for securing uniformity in the rules of Rugby. As things , were at present there were different interpretations in different parts of the Dominion, and this was apt to lead to confusion. The ]Hisition in Auckland, where certain departures had been made from tho code, w;ts cited by fhe chairman in support of his contention that there should be one set of' rules operating throughout 'he whole of the Dominion.
Air. M’Kcnzie (was then unanimously re-elected president.
It was decided to suggest to the New Zealand Rugby Union the adoption throughout the Dominion of the kicking-into-touch rule in force in Auckland, under which the ball must bounce before it goes into touch. A T arious points of Rugby law were considered, and interpretations given, thereon.
Regarding Rule 19, respecting scrummages, it was decided that when such, were ordered for a breach accruing nvithiu 10 yards of the touch-line, such, should take place between the twentyfive yards lines and not iuside.
After some discussion it was decided that a referee classified as a senior Teierec by one association should be recognised as such by all affiliated associations, and that a referee leaving one district to reside in another l>e received on . transfer by the association where jurisdiction lay over the matches in the place in which he. took up his new’residence; provided, however, that he carried ,with him a letter of transfer signed by on official of the a&?viation to which' he formerly belougelANNUAL MEETING OF ASSOCIATION. On the motion of the Canterbury .’Referees’ Association, it was decided that: if possible some system lie ■ arranged, for interchange of referees for ordinary club matehes and international games, and al‘o for interpi-ovincial games. Following a communication from the New South Wales Referees’ Assoeiatirm. with reference to uniform rulings on the laws of the game, it was resolved that, if a conference of the New South Wales. South. Africa, and New Zealand, referees Ire held to discuss the laws of game, then delegates should be appointed to represent the New Zealand Rugby Referees’ Association. On the motion of Mr. Gniney (Canterbury''. it was decided that any referee officiating in any internrovincial or international game should be presented with either a blazer, a badge, or a cap. The meeting concluded with a vote of, thanks to the chair.
