POLICE AND CIVIL BUSINESS.

The . poheo cases at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday were heard by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. —

Myra Hill, who was sentenced to six months' imprisonment on November 2 last in the Supreme ' Court, and who was at the Point Halswell detention camp, on April 28, escaped from the place, and was not recaptured until about a week later. It was pointed out by Sub-Inspector Willis that at Point Halswell the female prisoners were allowed a certain amount of liberty, and were placed on their honour. —The defendant was sentenced to a month's imprisonment, to be served at the conclusion of the sentence now being served by her.

Ernest Kaye pleaded guilty to being a rogue and a vagabond, in that he jioseessed insufficient lawful means of support. Sub-Inspector Willis stated that the man had been wandering about the streets for weeks, and had become >a nuisance. He had done no work, and was altogether an undesirable man to have about the streets. —Kaye was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment.

! A remand until Monday was granted in the case of S’tanley I. Collins, who was charged with the theft of a suitcase and contents, valued at <823. Bail was allowed in one surety of <825. Maud Grant was fined 10s. for drunkenness, and a similar amount for commiting a breach of her prohibition order. Convicted for the fourth time of drunV enness. and for the third time of com mitting a breach of his prohibition order. John J. Buckley was fined 20s. fol ’ each offence. Samuel H. Carter was fined 10s. for drunkenness, and 205., in defauft three days’ imprisonment, for a breach of his prohibition order. CIVIL CASES. Mr. E. Procktez is to pay Thomas Bal linger and Co., Ltd., <£l3 18s. 6d., ®r go to gaol for six days, the warrant to be suspended so long as <£2 per month is paid. D. Mason was ordered to pay the Wellington Gas Company, Ltd., the sum of £i Us., in default five days’ imprisonment, tho warrant to be suspended so long ns defendant pays <£2 per month.
