ANGLO-JAPANESE TREATY

QUESTION OF RENEWAL

UNITED STATES SENATOR’S CONVICTION

By Telegraph—Presa Association-Copyright New York, May 18. The “New York Tribune’s” correspondent at Washington interviewed Mr. Bertram L. Simpson, Adviser to the President of China, who toured Canada opposing the renewal ofdhe Anglo-Japanese Treaty. Mr. Sinipaon declared? “I am much impressed with the conviction of the United States Senators with whom I talked that it would be impossible for the Anglo-Japanese Treaty to be written so as to meet American objections. This is tremendously significant in view of the public utterances of Mr. W. Al. Hughes, Primo Minister of Australia, and Mr. W. F. Massey, Prime Minister of New Zealand, that the treaty must be renewed in such shape as to be satisfactory to the United States." Mr. Simpson said that Senators McCormick, Lodge, Borah, and Johnson concurred in this view.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.

INDIAN OPPOSITION. (Rec. May 19, 11.30 p.m.)

London, May 19.

It is learned on excellent -’ authority that the Indian Government is secretly throwing its influence in the scale against the renewal! 'of the AngloJapanese Treaty in view of the extraordinary development of Japanese trade in India ousting Indians from business. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
