NOTES AND COMMENTS By Glencoe. The Egmopt meeting will be concluded to-day. Tho Ashburton Cup meeting will open to-day, and will be concluded to-morrow. Tho chief event is tho Ashburton Cup. in which tho North Island-owned Kilrush and Rosewreath are engaged. Kilrush has raced badly lately, and. it will bo a surprise if ho is able to win to-day. Clean Sweep can hardlj’ be ready, and the handicapper has probably found out the consistent Palamon. Rosewreath i» a smart performer up to ten furlongs, and may lie one of the favourites, but if the going is heavy Bengeroop will keep the field very busy. Gamecock, 12st. 91b., is at the head of the hurdles, but tho top weight has not. done any racing, and may not be ready. Comment, lOst. 51b., and. John Barleycorn, 9st.. 111 b., read as well as anything in the race. The well-bred Battle Scene and Timepiece may carry most support in tlr# Hack AVelter Handicap, and Kildee, with Gib. above the minimum, may have something to say in the decision of the open Welter Handicap. Jazz, who is in receipt of a stone from Alurihiku, should be well to the fore in the Grove Farm Handicap, while the well-bred. Umo (Boniform— Alayarethe) should have plenty to say in the Laghnior Pl a^ e > “ ve furlongs, in which the two-year-olds have a big concession in the weights. A West Coast sportsman has purchased the Hawke’s Bay-bred gelding Demonstrate (bv Demosthenes— Te Awahau),and has placed him with R. W. King, at R.iccarton. Demonstrate has a few useful performances to his credit in the 1 overty Bay district, and he should pay his* way'in sprint races. General entries for the Auckland Racing Club’s Winter Meeting and acceptances for the Great Northern Hurdles and Steeplechase and Cornwall Handicap close at 5 p.m. on Friday. -rr nr iBattlescene, who is engaged in the Hack Welter Handicap at Ashburton was responsible for a smart gallop at Riccarton the other morning, when she comfortably defeated Paiestrina , over four furlongs in the best time of the moin in The present arrangements are that R. J Alaron will go to Australia next month with Gloaming and a couple of rising latest mail from Australia brings news of the retirement from the race, track of Cefigne, one of the for-age horses, up to a middle distance, seen in Australia for some years. In stake money the Grafton horse, who is now to do stud duty, won over a record only surpassed by Cai bines 4129,476.
