The ex-Mnyor and Mayoress (Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Luke) were tho recipients of presentations from the assembled staffs of I lie City Corporation. Mr. Luke was presented with an engraved gold watch, and Mrs. Luke with a beautiful pendant. The Town Clerk (Mr. J. It. Palmer), in making the presentations, referred to the staffs’ happy associations with Mr. and Mrs. Luke during the past eight years. Tributes to the recipients were also paid by the city engineer (Mr. W. H. Morton), the city solicitor (Mr. J. O’Shea), the city valuer (Mr. James Ames), and the city treasurer (Mr. Charles Collins). Air. and Mrs. Luke feelingly returned thanks. Major J. R. Boose, C.M.G.- travelling commissioner for the Royal Colonial Institute, will arrive in Wellington from Gisborne to-night. Air. W. Lingard. who has been a wellknown figure in city business circles for many years past, is at present;laid aside as the result of a rather severg accident. Mr. Lingard’s many friends will regret to learn that ho has been ordered to rest: from all physical and that it will bo some months before he will be able to get about again. « A Press Association message from Dunedin states that Air. T. Seollay was elected unopposed io the chairmanship of the Otago Harbour Board. Air. W. Empson and Airs. Empson will be among the passengers io England by the Tninui to-day.

A Christchurch Press Association message records the death of Air. Robert Spencer, a well-known cricketer, who acted on many occasions as umpire of big matches.

A Press Association telegram from Christchurch announces the dejith of the Rev. E. E. Chambers, who has been vicar of St. Saviour's, Lyttelton, since 1885. The deceased, who was 70 years of age, served with the Royal Navy, refiring in 1870 with the rank of lieutenant. He was prominently associated with public functions for some years, and was sole chaplain of the Permanent Artillery in the South Island, and an acting-chaplain of the Royal Navy. Mr. T. A. Skinner, manager for New South AVales of the South British Insurance Company, arrived at Auckland on Mondav bv the Alakura for a two months visit to New Zealand, at tho invitation of the directors of the company. He is accompanied by All's, and Skinner.

Air. Charles Francis and his daughter. Airs. Fitch, of New York, wfio arrived from the south yesterday, will he given a civic reception by the Mayor (Air. R. A. Wright) in the Afayor’s room in the Town Hall at noon to-day. At tho funeral yesterday morning of the late Donald Rohert Ritchie, a member of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, who died at Trentham on Sunday, Air. Luke, ALP., represented the Wellington citizens, this being practically his last official act as Alayor of the oily. Colonel Mitchell, ALP., D. 5.0., and Captain Hardham, V.C., represented ilia Returned Soldiers’ Association, and. Airs. Luke tho AVonion’s National Reserve. A party of boys from the training ship Amokura paraded and paid a last tribute to the memory of the deceased soldier. A. representative of Base Records Office attended on behalf of the Defence Department.
