MANAWATU NOTES

Mr. F. J. Nathan, of Palmerston North, general manager of the Glaxo Company, who has just returned from a visit to Australia, has left on an extended visit to America and England in the interests of his company. He expects to be away for about nine months. Some twelve months ngo the Palmerston North' Borough Council decided io order four motor buses to run in the borough, and eventually they let contracts for four chassis of the "Cemmcr” type. These should have come to hand before the New Year, and for some little time no information could be got as to their whereabouts. However, the four chassis have now come to lwn<l. They are fitted with twin pneumatic tyres oa the hind wheels and with single front wheels, which are also shod with pneumatic tyres. .They have, now been fitted up, and will be driven to Napier, where tho bodies, which are’being built there, will be put on. As the length of the wheel base is over Lift, din., tifere may be some difficulty in getting the chassis through the Manawatu Gorge, which is very narrow, anti has some extremely sharp turns. It is expected that the buses will be on the road in a ’month or six weeks’ time.

Tho Manawatu Hunt opened the season on Saturday, when there was a very large attendance of the public to watch the sport, the drags being laid so that people could see tho various runs from the road. There was a very large following of visitors both in motor-cars and other modes of conveyance. There were over fifty followers, and it looks as if hunting in this district is to be revived, and it is evident that it has quite recovered from the set-back it received during the war. when so many of its devotee! were doing their duty at the front. Tho going was good, though a little hard, but on the whole the display of jumping was good. There is a very heavy calendar for 1 ho sittings of tho Supreme Court including two charges of manslaughter, while there are over a dozen cases for dissolution of marriage.
