MAGISTRATE’S COURT

POLICE AND MAINTENANCE CASES The police business ,at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning was taken bv Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. A sixteen-year-old girl, for whom Mr. C. A. L. Treadwell appeared. pleaded guilty io stealing a diamond ring at Silverstream. value £2O. Chief-Detective Ward said that the theft took place on April 9, ami when questioned by Detective Nuttall some days later the girl denied all knowledge of the matter, but a few days ago she admitted the theft.

Mr. Treadwell, pleading on behalf of the girl, said he agreed with, the chiefdetective that probably a term of probation would do her good. Her parents were in very poor circumstances, and perhaps that was the reason for the girl committing tho theft. The girl was convicted, and placed on probation for a period of two years. Joseph Dossenbach was convicted and discharged for drunkenness, and for using obscene language he was fined 40s. A prohibition order was issued against him.

Frank Connelly was fined ss. for drunkenness. and 20s. for using obscene language in. Jervois Quay. For drunkenness, Patrick Sinnott, against whom there were two previous convictions, was fined 10s., and for committing a breach of his prohibition order he was fined an additional 20s. John Madden, with six previous convictions against him for drunkenness, was fined 405., and the Magistrate warned him that his next appearance would result in his being.sent to Pakatoa. MAINTENANCE CASES.

John J. Buckley, who was in arrear to the amount of .£23, on a maintenance order was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. the warrant to bo suspended so long as ho pays 20s. per week. . Walter Honey Flatt, whose arrears totalled .£2O 10s., was also sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended so long as he pays 20s. per yeek. Edgar- J. Doherty was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment for disobeying the terms of a maintenance order. The warrant. to be suspended for fourteen days to give him an opportunity of complying with the order.

Thomas Hodges, for a similar offence, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment. the warrant to be suspended for seven days.

John C. Laverock, who was also convicted of disobeying a maintenance order. was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment. the warrant to be suspended fol fourteen days.
