SHALLOW WATER VESSELS
The problem of finding a satisfactory means of propelling craft in very shallowwaters is one which is of great practical interest in many parts of the world. ABritish engineer, who lias given special attention to it, has evolved a method of jet propulsion which gives very satisfactory results. A centrifugal pump fitted on an upright spindle draws water in at tho centre and discharges it by two mouths at the sides. When the jets are thrown aft tho boat moves forward, and since the pump can be turned round it affords a means of steering as well as propelling the boat. Should the 'boat run aground, the pump can be used to squirt water on the mud or sand, so as gradually to wash it away and enable the boat to got clear. A weed cutter is provided at the mouth of the pump to remove any vegetable growths which may collect there. Although this method of. propulsion is not so efficient as the ordinary screw it is much better adapted to. the navigation of shallow weed-clogged. waterways. Tests which have been carried out on about two hundred miles o. . derelict waterways have proved the prac-.-Heal value of the invention.
