A public meeting was held in blasterton last night, when the Mayor (.Mr, W. H. Jaekson) gave a resume of the council’s financiil position, and stressed the necessity of carrying the draimice loan at the forthcoming elections. The 'Mayor explainer that the present conn, oil, by roo-gan sing the borough office staff, had, despite increases in salaries, reduced the wages bill from £l4OO in 1919 to £ll2O in 1921. It did not need another epidemic to impress ratepayers fh'd proper borough drainage wa.s abso. lutely necessary. If the proposed loan was not. carried the Health Department had power to step in and do the work ?,t tlie expense of the ratepayers. Referring to the municipal gasworks, Air Jackson said that no one need be afraid (lint hydro-electricity would do away with the necessity for gas. Each form of power had its distinct uses. In spite of the fact that railway freight had io be paid on coal for the retorts, Mastertnn was supplied with the cheapest gas in the Dominion. Councillor Candy also spoke of the necessity of the drainage loan being carried, and a resolution to th’s < Ifwas passed. No bank failure has occurred in Ch'»a for more than 9IKI years.
