HAWKE’S BAY MEETING

MAIOHA WINS THE CUP. By Telegraph—Special Reporter. Napier, April 20. The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s meeting was opened to-day in fine weather, but. (heavy rain fell before th® open sprint and continued without intermission for the rest of the day. The course was in good order, but a .trifle hard The attendance was good, although affected by the weather. A sum of <£31,694 was put through the machine, as against X 31.761 on the corresponding day of last year. The judicial committee met after the Hawke’s Bay Stakes, and suspended Roy Reed for three months for interfering with Absurdum and Prince Ferouz. THE RACING DESCRIBED.

Kenepuru was a better favourite, than All Talk in the Mangatarata Hurdles, while several of the others were also ; supported for good sums. Gtrangewavs led All Talk over the first fence, but Powder King then took charge, and, followed bv All Talk asd Marua, ho led out of‘the straight. Down the back Crosswords amd Kenepuru moved up, but Powder King was always going well, ’ and he ran into the straight with a good break, winning by several lengths from Crosswords, with Marua, iFirst Line, and All Talk in that order, Ivenepuru fell at the last fence. Scornful wns scratched. Gamboola, Spook, Earthshine, and Kildee was ths ordei - of favouritism in the Longlands Welter, for which all started. Gamboola jumped out smartly, and, followed by Spook and Earthshine, he led for a mile. Antler then appeared, and cut Spook out of second place, but he could not reach the winner who won comfortably. Spook was close up, a/nd 'then came tEarthshtno and Whanako. There were no withdrawals from tne Nursery Handicap, and, though she drew the outside, Soldier’s Love was macla favourite, with Anomaly and Scion backed in that, order. Scion began best, but Soldier’s Love soon joined her, and the pair le<l the field at a strong pace. They were clear of Anomaly entering the "straight, and in the run home the favourite won by a length. Soulteriha got up -in the last few strides, and got third place. Anomaly, who got a very bad passage, and Golden Light were the next to finish. Mr. W. G. Stead started both Sasanor and Absurdum in the Stakes, and the bracket was a better favourite than In® Hawk. The latter began best, and soon had a lead on Absurdum and Prince Ferouz, while the top weights brought up the rear. Entering the. straight, Silver Link was pulled up, having broken a blood-vessel. The Hawk eas “y held his own in the run to the post, end won by two lengths from Prince Ferouz, who beat Sasanof by a length. Absurdum was fourth. , . The Cup was a great race, and full of Interest the whole way. Lovematch, Maloha, Sunart, and Insurrection was the way the public fancied them. There were 18 runners, Heather Sprig being withdrawn. At the start, Molyneaux, Hyttus, and Paonui were prominent from Insurrection. Down the back Hie leading positions were unchanged, but Maiolia- and Vagabond moved up to the front division. Rounding the Railway bend Hyttus went hack. Entering ths straight, Landslide headed Molyneaux, but Maioha, who had got a splendid run on the rails alb the way, challenged him at the distance, and in the run home beat the northerner by a neck. Insurrection finished well in third place, and the*n came Sunart and Lovemfttcu. The time was a record for the race. Bindle end Ruatara were taken out ot the Porangahau Handicap, and Tigritya was made favourite. Truthful and Prince. Randall raced to the front at the start nnd led into the straight, where Tigritya took charge. She was challenged by Solfanello end Raceful, and shook them off, but over the lart bit Prince Randall came again and got up to win by a head- Raceful was a length away, and Solfanello finished fourth. ~ All started in the Autumn Handicap, Svlvan Heather Sprig, and Ruatara being backed in that order. Orawaia set a fast pace, and led into the rtraig.it from Verbosity and Heathen Sprig, with Svlvan coming fast on the rails. b erbositv finished the best,, and won by a head from Heather Sprig, with Sylvan a length awav.
