HARRIERS
OPENING OF THE SEASON. The harrier season for 1921 was opened • t Lyall Bay on Saturday. The number present easily constituted a record, there being an attendance of over 120 members from the various clubs of the city. Mr. A. W, O. Travers, in the unavoidable absence of'Mr. R. W. MWilley, asked the .Mayor to open the season. Mr. Luke, in doing so, spoke of the clean life necessary for those who took part in this sport, and emphasised that good clean sport made men better members of the community. He hoped that the season would be very successful from all points of view, ami that each and every member would do credit to his club. Mr. W. H. Bonnett, president of the recentlyformed Wellington Harriers’ Club, the oldest harriers’ club in Wellington, expressed the great pleasure it gave him to t see the old club once more to the fora. 'Messrs. A. A. Marryatt (Olympic Coum ■ cil) and W. A. Morpeth (one of the hist members of the Wellington harriers) also •poke. The teams then formed up, and a start was made with a short distance run along the beach, thence over the hills nround Miramar, and back to the ear •beds, where the pack re-formed for the run home, a distance of about 400 yards. The run-in was won by C. Campbell, with W Steatchard second, and K. Griffen third. The start along the Parade was a verv flne sight; in fact, several of the old timers stated that in all their experience It was easily the btet. Afternoon tea was partaken of, and Mr. W, H. Philp (president of the Olympic Harriers) presented Mr. A. A. Marryatt (a, vice-president of the club, who is leaving shortly for Auckland) with a. silvermounted walking-stick. Mr. Philp spoke of the high Meem in which Mr. Marryatt was held in Wellington, not only nt • porting circles, but other sphere as well, and wished him, on behalf ol the club, the best of good luck. Mr. A. 1. Davies (chairman of the N.Z.A.A.A.) endorsed the, remarks of Mr. Philp. Mr. Marrvatt thanked the club for their gift, and hoped they would be successful. Cheer* were heartily given for Mr. MarryAmongst the runners waa Mr. Pollock, who, ae a boy, ran in the ftret harrier race held in Wellington Al- • though not coming in first in the run homo, Mr. Pollock still showed some of the younger members how- to go.
